There was a farmer in Africa who was happy and content. He was happy because he was content. He was content because he was happy. One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along with them. The wise man said, "If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could have your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist, you could probably own your own country." And then he went away. That night the farmer couldn't sleep. He was unhappy and he was discontent. He was unhappy because he was discontent and discontent because he was unhappy.

The next morning he made arrangements to sell off his farm, took care of his family and went in search of diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn't find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn't find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broke. He got so disheartened that he threw himself into the Barcelona River and committed suicide.

Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the camels at a stream that ran through the farm. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow. He thought it would look good on the mantle piece. He picked up the stone and put it in the living room.

That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He asked, "Is Hafiz back?" The new owner said, "No, why do you ask?" The wise man said, "Because that is a diamond. I recognize one when I see one." The man said, no, that's just a stone I picked up from the stream. Come, I'll show you.

There are many more." They went and picked some samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds.*

What is the moral of this story? There are five morals:

1. When our attitude is right, we realize that we are walking on acres and acres of diamonds. Opportunity is always under our feet. We don't have to go anywhere. All we need to do is recognize it.

2. The grass on the other side always looks greener.

3. While we are dyeing the grass on the other side, there are others who are dyeing the grass on our side. They would be happy to trade places with us.

4. When people don't know how to recognize opportunity, they complain of noise when it knocks.

5. The same opportunity never knocks twice. The next one may be better or worse, but it is never the same one.

In today's world, personal branding is essential. The job market is crowded and competitive. To make your mark and have an edge over others you need to have a clear idea of what you have and what you have to offer (and to whom)? What makes you different from other players in the same field? What do you have to offer that is demonstrably different, better, cooler?

Think hard and Dig deep inside yourself and find out. Once you have your message down, clear and concise, make the opportunities to communicate and market your self and how you can help.

Developing your brand

During the development of "BrandYou" you need to ask yourself some basic questions.

What are my skills , knowledge and talent.

Skills are something which you can do. It is how to do certain things. The accountant knows how to prepare a balance sheet, the surgeon knows how to operate, the software programmer knows how to write a piece of software.

Knowledge is awareness for example
Factual knowledge- which is fact based fro example you know the industry, each player, strengths and weakness , product line, manufacturing, …
Experiential knowledge - The knowledge which comes with the experience.

Talent is something which you do exceedingly well. It is because of certain thoughts and feeling repeatedly there is a route created in your brain.

The best part is knowledge and skills can be taught but the talent is in born.
It is the inner nature. You should brand yourself by your talent and have the knowledge and skills as the tool to polish and position this talent. It is easier to draw what is in rather than trying to put what is not there. Select your niche depending on your talent.

Let us take an example of Dhoni - a person who has risen in less than three years to super stardom. Today his popularity is even greater than Tendulkar - another person who has talent in truck loads.

Look how he has positioned himself. Is he a better cricketer in terms of skill than Dravid, Ganguly or Tendulkar . The answer is No. Is he more knowledgeable than the so many other cricketers both Indian and foreigners. Again the answer is No.
What is his talent ?

1) He is cool under pressure, he does not get panicky . Remember three finals -20-20 world cup, Indo Australia tri series and IPL, two he won and the last one he lost but he was cool and calm whilemaking his moveS. In fact the IPL final when he lost the match on the last ball, he with his team went into the huddle and said we played good cricket and we would celebrate it. There was no shame and sadness.. He commented that his team has admitted that they made mistakes as a team - the team made fielding and bowling and batting errors.
2) He backs his people and instills passion in his players. You could see the players ready to die for him.

Packaging your brand

A lot of money is spent on the packaging of the brands. The packaging is as critical as the product. As it is the first interface or touch point between the brand and the consumer Companies spend tons of money on the packaging of their goods and services. As an individual , the packaging of self on a basic level is the way one dresses, speaks , have likes and dislikes, spends his /her leisure time.
On an advanced level -your team, your vision, how you come across in your interaction constitutes the packaging.

Let us take the example of two of the most successful skippers in IPL - Shane Warne and Dhoni. As far as packaging is concerned - you cannot have two people who are more different from each other .

In todays world of noise and limited attention span the packaging sometimes is as important as the brand especially. in the initial phase .

One word of caution do not mistake packaging for brand or try to bluff people by copying packaging for a brand which you are not.

Treat mistakes as experience

In the quest for the mastery, you will fall , you need to get up and walk . Wipro founder- Azim Premji has said if you are meeting 80% of your goal you are doing fine but if you are achieving 100 % of your goal then you are not trying enough, the standards are too low. Raise your bar and stretch your goals..

When Dhoni was asked, how he plans to maintain his position of India's captain, he said, "We will win more matches than we lose." He didn't say that he will win them all, because he knows that losing is a lesson towards winning. A lot of us drive ourselves crazy by expecting to win every time we get on with our work. There will be good deals and bad deals, good days and bad days; success is about creating the good ones more often than the bad ones.

Never Be Satisfied

Branding self is not a onetime activity. We need to constantly reinvent pick up new skills, exposure into the sunrise industries, regions or functions. There is a need to revolutionize the portfolio of skills every five years. This is a minimum survival necessity. Changing may be painful, but we need to get out of our comfort zone. Remember : be distinct ... or be extinct. So sharpen you saw. As Stephen Covey says in the book -Seven Habits of Highly effective people.

Let us see some of the celebrity to see how consciously they have branded themselves. We can also become a brand and a celebrity in our own narrow chosen field.

Amir Khan -
Brand- perfectionist, only does good work , serious about his work , focused., different..
In a world occupied by the entertainers, gloss and glamour Amir Khan has differentiated himself by his becoming very selective and focused. His packaging- reflects his way of dressing, taking the personality of the character. It is so successful that Shahrukh Khan has to copy the same strategy for Om Shanti Om- by keeping long hairs and having six packs.

Vijay Mallya -
Brand -Ostentatious, Show man, Live life Kingsize.-
Through his parties, hobnobbing with celebrities, kingfisher calendar, yacht, Formula 1 team, IPL team, aircraft. He has build the aura of hedonism.

Sania Mirza-
Brand-Aggressive, in your face, fun loving., making a statement.

Sania Mirza - very aggressive in the matches , wearing T-shirts with provocative messages and wearing ornaments like prominent nose ring.

God-Shiva-Mahadeva
Shiva is the god of the yogis, self-controlled and celibate, Devoid of any desires is clothed only with deer skin and has no comforts, pleasures… residing in a cave . It represents positive sense of the shedding of old habits. He is the destroyer or transformer.

God Vishnu
Vishnu is often represented resting on the coiled serpent Shesha, with Vishnu's consort Lakshmi massaging his feet. He is a protector and preserver . He has four hands and he is wearing lots of ornaments . Resting in luxury and comfort.

All The Best!!!

Being the boss of your ANGER!!!

Sometimes you just get so angry that you feel like you are going to burst! It may seem like your anger will be the boss of you, instead of you being the boss of your anger.

What can you do to work through that anger and keep yourself and others safe?

  • Take a deep breath and breathe out hard.
  • Count to 10 slowly in your mind before you open your mouth. Count another 10 if you are still feeling out of control. Stop and think about what to do or say, then make a good choice.
  • Walk away and go somewhere else until you've thought about what you can do.
  • Use your words to tell your feelings. Never hurt someone with your hands, feet or by what you say.
  • Say what you feel in a firm voice, not a loud shouting voice.
  • Sometimes you need to do something to get those angry feelings out .

Some ways of getting out the anger.

  • Squeeze a pillow, a ball or your jumper really hard and say to yourself that you are squeezing out your anger.
  • Try taking some deep breaths until you feel your heart slow down again.
  • Go for a fast walk or run, somewhere safe until you feel calmer.
  • Sometimes anger can be useful.
  • Use your anger to do a chore that you really hate, eg. cleaning up your bedroom, sweeping, mowing or cleaning up the shed. You get rid of your anger and can feel good about getting that chore done too.
  • Listen to some music and dance really hard.
  • Listen to some soothing music, lie on the floor and do some relaxation exercise.
  • Talk to someone you trust about how you feel.

When you're feeling calmer

  • Think - is this your problem or someone else's? If it's theirs, tell them so in a quiet voice and walk away. Or, if something you are doing is a problem for someone else, see if you can work out a solution.
  • If it's your problem then you need to deal with it.
  • Is this a minor drama or a major drama?
  • Minor drama. If it's really not worth worrying about, then forget it.
  • Major drama. If it's a really big problem ask yourself some questions.
  • Can you deal with it yourself?
  • Do you need some help looking for ways to deal with the problem?

  • After you have thought about these things, work out what you are going to do to sort things out with the person or situation that started your angry feelings.

Keeping yourself safe from other people's anger

  • If you live with someone who gets very angry, you can often recognise when they're getting angry.
  • The best way to avoid their anger being turned on you is by not being there.
  • Get out of their way.
  • Stay calm.
  • Don't talk.
  • Don't get angry yourself.
  • Don't shout.
  • Tell a trusted adult if you feel unsafe.

A - Avoid. Don't let your anger or the anger of others control you.

N - Never use your body or your voice to hurt others.

G - Get away so that you manage your anger safely.

E - Evaluate. Think about your choices, and then make a choice, which keeps you and others safe.

R - Responsible. You are responsible for your feelings. No-one can make you angry, you allow yourself to become angry.

What works for you?

These are ways in which some people control their anger.

• "I go to my room and scream in the pillow".

• "I go away by myself to think".

• "When I get angry I run outside and kick the footy (football) or I go in my room and do wrestling moves with my toy monkey".

• I am very mad -I feel very bad - My face is red - I might go to bed.

• "When I am angry I lie on my bed and listen to my radio or have a sleep".

• "I go for a real fast bike-ride or I ride on my roller blades".

Let me show you below what a wise advertising great John Carlton says.

You work hard.

But you can be too lazy, too.
In fact, it's in our nature to be lazy. I often tell people that, if you really want to understand how the human race behaves, you must go watch the gorilla cage at the zoo for a week. At first, you'll just see a bunch of hairy apes doing their thing. But soon enough, you'll begin to recognize the many traits they share with us.

Such as... being as lazy as possible, as much as possible."

Here is one tactic that actually forces employees to get things done in offices:

Deadlines

Oh, they can be hateful things, deadlines. Reminiscent of high school papers due, smog tests needed, so-and-so's birthday coming up (when they expect something impressive from you).

And when you finally study on your own or learn new skills for which there are no deadlines from others, it can be tempting to abandon them.

Big mistake. As inherently lazy creatures, we need deadlines to be efficient.

Deadlines make your goals become reality. They form a brick wall in the misty netherworld of "tomorrow" that keeps you in line.

Deadlines should be an integral part of your study [exam success] plan.

The ONLY way to attack a problem... is to roll up your sleeves and dig in. And have a plan that includes a deadline for finishing it.

This is not a small or minor hindrance in your quest for success. I recently fielded yet another email from a rookie who claimed to desperately want to become "the best ad writer in the world."

Okay. Fine. But his question reeked of fear - he wanted to know how much time each day he should spend reading books, about writing and advertising, and how often he should copy out great ads in longhand.

Not okay. Not fine. This boy is crippled with "can't let the curtain come up" disease. A pretty bad case, too.

Unfortunately... he's got a lot of company.

This kind of question never even forms in the mind of someone truly seeking ad writing expertise. You're too busy making your goal a reality. It's not "how long should I prepare," but what else can I do, right now, to make this happen?"

Action, not excuses for inaction.

You want to get into it up you neck, as quickly as possible.

I am brutal about my own deadlines. I've never missed a deadline for a client - never - and I'll be damned if I'll treat myself with any less respect. Even so... and even though I know the power of deadlines... I still waffle and hesitate to make them part of my plan for any project. Because they can be painful. You have to forgo pleasures and fun things, sometimes, to meet your deadlines. You have to stay up late, and concentrate and focus and absorb and retain stuff. And it hurts. Mommy! I don't feeeeel well. I need to stay home today.

Nope. Sick or stressed, crashed computer or stalled car, you gotta meet your deadlines. It's good for you. (It's true - nearly all the really successful people I know... the ones having fun achieving their success... rarely get sick.)

It's also another of those little secret traits that set you apart from your competitors, no matter what goals you've set for yourself. Setting and meeting deadlines is a major form of taking responsibility for yourself. You become the "action center point" of any deal, because you're the guy making everything happen.

And you'll come to love your deadlines, I promise you. Because, once you stop stalling around and making excuses and start setting deadlines... an amazing amount of things will start happening in your life. And you'll be the guy making them happen.

It happens fast, and it changes your life almost immediately. So stop whining. Embrace your next deadline. It's your partner."

* It is very important to understand thatemotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence , it is not the triumph of heart over head, it is the unique intersection of both.

* Emotional intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feeland act. It shapes our interactions with others and understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn, it allows us to set priorities, it determines the majority of our daily actions.

* Emotional intelligence is the subject of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others feelings and emotions to descriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions.

* Emotional intelligence represents an ability to validly reason with emotion and to use emotions to enhance thought.

If we summarize the emotional intelligence, the term encompasses the following five characterstics and abilities .

!. SELF AWARENESS-- Knowing your emotions, recognizing feeling as they occur, and discriminating between them.

2. MOOD MANAGEMENT-- Handling feeling so they are relevant to the current situation and you react appropriately.

3. SELF-MOTIVATION-- "Gathering up" your feeling and directing yourself towards a goal despite self-doubt, and impulsiveness.

4. EMPATHY-- Recognizing feelings in others and tuning into their verbal and non-verbal cues.

5. MANAGING RELATIONSHIP-- Handling interpersonal interaction, conflict resolution and negotions.

Being Self-motivated means driven, focused, ready for objective discussion, also being sharp and smart enough not to be manipulated and be open to positive learning. Being in this state of mind always, is the challenge.

Steps :

1.Understand :

"self motivated" is a state of mind which we should earnestly try to be in as often as we can. The first step to understand is that this state of mind is possible, but it is generally very elusive or comes for a short span of time, encouraged by short term commitment or by a dream fulfilment process.

2.Remember :

That what you think is unique in your life or situation is not unique at all. There may be something similar or more unique in others' lives. There are only two types of people; one who succumbs to a situation, or one who overcomes successfully.

3.Try to think about good things around you :

Change your over all mood and then start taking small significant decisions - look for getting more facts for accurate assessment of the situation.

4.Get into positive spiral :

One positive step leading to the next.

5.Remember :

That being self motivated is your challenge. Do not expect any external positive contribution. If you get that, you are lucky. Looking inside on your strengths is the KEY.

Tips

•The objective is to unleash your true potential.

•The journey of unleashing the potential is a truly worthy-one. During this journey knowingly/unknowingly you will have helped many unleash their respective potential.

•There will be hurdles, but you have got to keep going. One wrong step can wash out all the good steps you have taken and similarly one right step can also leap you forward. This is Life.

•Positive affirmations repeated often will help you become strong. Choose one that fits with your problem. If you are scared, "I have no fear". If you are shy "I am a very confident person".

•Speak them as though you are already the way you want to be. Do not say "I am becoming positive", "I am positive" is much better.

Warnings

•Be soft to yourself.

•Being self motivated does not mean forcefully smiling and trying to please everyone.

•Have courage to confront hurdles if you really think you are right.

•Do not beat yourself up if you suffer a lapse in your new-found pattern of self-motivation. You will get back on track. Be self-forgiving.

Here are a few tips to help you Improve your concentration

1. To enhance your concentration and powers of focus, count your steps when you walk. This is a particularly strong technique. Take six steps while taking a long inhale, hold your breath for another six steps, and then exhale for six steps. If six steps is too long for the breaths, do whatever you feel comfortable with. You will feel very alert, refreshed, internally quiet and centered after this exercise. So many people allow their minds to be filled with mental chatter. All peak performers appreciate the power of a quiet, clear mind which will concentrate steadily on all important tasks.

2. Enhance your will-power; it is likely one of the best training programs you can invest in. Here are some ideas to strengthen your will and become a stronger person:

a) Do not let your mind float like a piece of paper in the wind. Work hard to keep it focused at all times. When doing a task, think of nothing else. When walking to work, count the steps that it takes to get all the way to the office. This is not easy but your mind will soon understand that you hold its reins and not vice versa. Your mind must eventually become as still as a candle flame in a corner where there is no draft.

b) Your will is like a muscle. You must first exercise it and then push before it gets stronger. This necessarily involves short term pain but be assured that the improvements will come and will touch your character in a most positive way. When you are hungry, wait another hour before your meal. When you are laboring over a difficult task and your mind is prompting you to pick up the latest magazine for a break or to get up and go talk to a friend, curb the impulse. Soon you will be able to sit for hours in a precisely concentrated state. Sir Issac Newton, one of the greatest classical physicists the world has produced, once said: "if I have done the public any service, it is due to patient thought." Newton had a remarkable ability to sit quietly and think without interruption for very long periods of time. If he can develop this so can you.

c) You can also build your will-power by restraint in your conduct with others. Speak less (use the 60/40 Rule = listen 60% of the time and speak a mere 40%, if that). This will not only make you more popular but you will learn much wisdom as everyone we meet, every day has something to teach us. Also restrain the urge to gossip or to condemn someone who you feel has made a mistake. Stop complaining and develop a cheerful, vital and strong personality. You will greatly influence others.

3. Become a highly disciplined time manager. There are roughly 168 hours in a week. This surely allows plenty of time for achievement of the many goals we desire to accomplish. Be ruthless with your time. Set aside a few minutes each morning to plan your day. Plan around your priorities and focus on not only those tasks which are immediate but not important (i.e., many telephone calls) but especially on those which are important but not urgent, for these allow for the greatest personal and professional development. Important but not immediate activities are those which produce long-term, sustainable benefits and include exercise, strategic planning, the development of relationships and professional education. Never let the things which matter most be placed in the backseat as compared to those that matter least.

4.The Two Minute Mind is an excellent exercise for developing concentration. Simply stare at the second hand on your wristwatch for two minutes and think about nothing else for that time. At first your mind will wander but after 21 days of practice, your attention will not waver during the routine. One of the greatest qualities a person can develop to ensure his success is the ability to focus for extended periods of time. Learn to build up your concentration muscles and no task will be too difficult for you.

5. To enhance your concentration, read a passage in a book you have never explored. Then try to recite it verbatim. Practice this for only 5 minutes a day and enjoy the results which follow after a few months of effort.

6. 83% of our sensory input comes from our eyes. To truly concentrate on something, shut your eyes and you will remove much distraction.

Would you like to become a millionaire? Silly question, I know. Who wouldn’t? With that in mind, I thought I’d share some tips on getting rich from none other than Warren Buffett, the world’s richest man.

Buffett got his start selling sticks of Juicy Fruit gum as a kid in the mid-1930s, and ultimately became the world’s greatest investor. What follows is a list of things that he’s learned along the way…

  1. Reinvest your profits. When you make money, reinvest your profits instead of spending them. Even a small sum can ultimately be turned into great wealth.
  2. Be willing to be different. Don’t base your decisions on what everyone else is saying or doing. Think for yourself if you want to be above average.
  3. Never suck your thumb. Do your homework, and be prepared to quickly make up your mind and act on it. Avoid unnecessary sitting and thinking.
  4. Spell out the deal before you start. Your leverage is always greatest before you begin a job. Always work out the specifics of a deal before you start, even if you’re dealing with friends or family.
  5. Watch small expenses. Be vigilant about minimizing your expenses, both in business and in your personal life. By doing so, you’ll ensure that you profits or paycheck go further than ever before.
  6. Limit what you borrow. You can’t borrow your way to wealth, so be careful with loans and credit cards. And if you get in over your head, negotiate with your lenders to pay what you can. Once you’re debt free, save money and start investing.
  7. Be persistent. With tenacity and ingenuity, you can win against a more established competitor.
  8. Know when to quit. Know when to walk away from a losing proposition. There’s no sense in repeating the same old mistakes trying to dig yourself out of a hole.
  9. Assess the risks. When faced with a decision, imagine the best- and worst-case scenarios. If the benefits don’t outweigh the risks, then think twice before proceeding.
  10. Know what success really means. There’s more to life than money. According to Buffett, “When you get to my age, you’ll measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you. That’s the ultimate test of how you’ve lived your life.”

It’s pretty simple, really. Spend less than you earn, invest regularly, don’t go into debt, don’t take unnecessary risks, and stick to it. There are no magic bullets.

In the Words of Ms.Sudha Murthy herself:

It was in Pune that I met Narayan Murthy through my friend Prasanna who is now the Wipro chief, who was also training in Telco. Most of the books that Prasanna lent me had Murthy's name on them which meant that I had a preconceived image of the man.

Contrary to expectation, Murthy was shy, bespectacled and an introvert. When he invited us for dinner... I was a bit taken aback as I thought the young man was making a very fast move. I refused since I was the only girl in the group. But Murthy was relentless and we all decided to meet for dinner the next day at 7.30 p.m. at Green Fields hotel on the Main Road, Pune.

The next day I went there at 7' o clock since I had to go to the tailor near the hotel. And what do I see? Mr. Murthy waiting in front of the hotel and it was only seven. Till today, Murthy maintains that I had mentioned (consciously!) that I would be going to the tailor at 7 so that I could meet him. And I maintain that I did not say any such thing consciously or unconsciously because I did not think of Murthy as anything other than a friend at that stage. We have agreed to disagree on this matter.

Soon, we became friends. Our conversations were filled with Murthy's experiences abroad and the books that he has read. My friends insisted that Murthy was trying to impress me because he was interested in me. I kept denying it till one fine day, after dinner Murthy said,I want to tell you something. I knew this was it. It was coming.

He said, I am 5'4" tall. I come from a lower middle class family. I can never become rich in my life and I can never give you any riches. You are beautiful, bright, and intelligent and you can get anyone you want. But will you marry me? I asked Murthy to give me some time for an answer. My father didn't want me to marry a wannabe politician,(a communist at that) who didn't have a steady job and wanted to build an orphanage.

When I went to Hubli I told my parents about Murthy and his proposal. My mother was positive since Murthy was also from Karnataka, seemed intelligent and comes from a good family. But my father asked: What's his job, his salary, his qualifications etc?

Murthy was working as a research assistant and was earning less than me. He was willing to go dutch with me on our outings. My parents agreed to meet Murthy in Pune on a particular day at 10 a. m sharp. Murthy did not turn up. How can I trust a man to take care of my daughter if he cannot keep an appointment, asked my father. At 12noon Murthy turned up in a bright red shirt! He had gone on work to Bombay, was stuck in a traffic jam on the ghats, so he hired a taxi(though it was very expensive for him) to meet his would-be father-in-law.

Father was unimpressed. My father asked him what he wanted to become in life. Murthy said he wanted to become a politician in the communist party and wanted to open an orphanage.

My father gave his verdict. NO. I don't want my daughter to marry somebody who wants to become a communist and then open an orphanage when he himself didn't have money to support his family.

Ironically, today, I have opened many orphanages something, which Murthy wanted to do 25 years ago. By this time I realized I had developed a liking towards Murthy which could only be termed as love. I wanted to marry Murthy because he is an honest man. He proposed to me highlighting the negatives in his life. I promised my father that I will not marry Murthy without his blessings though at the same time, I cannot marry anybody else. My father said he would agree if Murthy promised to take up a steady job. But Murthy refused saying he will not do things in life because somebody wanted him to. So, I was caught between the two most important people in my life.

The stalemate continued for three years during which our courtship took us to every restaurant and cinema hall in Pune. In those days, Murthy was always broke. Moreover, he didn't earn much to manage. Ironically today, he manages Infosys Technologies Ltd., one of the world's most reputed companies.

He always owed me money. We used to go for dinner and he would say, I don't have money with me, you pay my share, I will return it to you later. For three years I maintained a book on Murthy's debt to me.. No, he never returned the money and I finally tore it up after my wedding. The amount was a little over Rs 4000. During this interim period Murthy quit his job as research assistant and started his own software business. Now, I had to pay his salary too! Towards the late 70s computers were entering India in a big way.

During the fag end of 1977 Murthy decided to take up a job as General Manager at Patni Computers in Bombay. But before he joined the company he wanted to marry me since he was to go on training to the US after joining.

My father gave in as he was happy Murthy had a decent job, now we were married in Murthy's house in Bangalore on February 10, 1978 with only our two families present. I got my first silk sari. the wedding expenses came to only Rs. 800 (US $17) with Murthy and I pooling in Rs. 400 each .

I went to the US with Murthy after marriage. Murthy encouraged me to see America on my own because I loved traveling. I toured America for three months on backpack and had interesting experiences which will remain fresh in my mind forever. Like the time when the New York police took me into custody because they thought I was an Italian trafficking drugs in Harlem. Or the time when I spent the night at the bottom of the Grand Canyon with an old couple. Murthy panicked because he couldn't get a response from my hotel room even at midnight. He thought I was either killed or kidnapped.

IN 1981 MURTHY WANTED TO START INFOSYS. HE HAD A VISION AND ZERO CAPITAL...initially I was very apprehensive about Murthy getting into business. We did not have any business background.. Moreover we were living a comfortable life in Bombay with a regular pay check and I didn't want to rock the boat. But Murthy was passionate about creating good quality software. I decided to support him.

Typical of Murthy, he just had a dream and no money. So I gave him Rs 10,000 which I had saved for a rainy day, without his knowledge and told him, This is all I have. Take it. I give you three years sabbatical leave. I will take care of the financial needs of our house. You go and chase your dreams without any worry. But you have only three years!

Murthy and his six colleagues started Infosys in 1981, with enormous interest and hard work. In 1982 I left Telco and moved to Pune with Murthy. We bought a small house on loan which also became the Infosys office. I was a clerk-cum-cook-cum-programmer. I also took up a job as Senior Systems Analyst with Walchand group of Industries to support the house. In 1983 Infosys got their first client, MICO, in Bangalore. Murthy moved to Bangalore and stayed with his mother while I went to Hubli to deliver my second child, Rohan.

Ten days after my son was born, Murthy left for the US on project work. I saw him only after a year, as I was unable to join Murthy in the US because my son had infantile eczema, an allergy to vaccinations. So for more than a year I did not step outside our home for fear of my son contracting an infection. It was only after Rohan got all his vaccinations that I came to Bangalore where we rented a small house in Jayanagar and rented another house as Infosys headquarters.

My father presented Murthy a scooter to commute. I once again became a cook, programmer, clerk, secretary, office assistant et al. Nandan Nilekani (MD of Infosys) and his wife Rohini stayed with us. While Rohini babysat my son, I wrote programs for Infosys. There was no car, no phone, and just two kids and a bunch of us working hard, juggling our lives and having fun while Infosys was taking shape. It was not only me but also the wives of other partners too who gave their unstinted support. We all knew that our men were trying to build something good.

Mr. and Mrs.Murthy with Mr. amd Mrs Nilekani

It was like a big joint family, taking care and looking out for one another. I still remember Sudha Gopalakrishna looking after my daughter Akshata with all care and love while Kumari Shibulal cooked for all of us.. Murthy made it very clear that it would either be me or him working at Infosys. Never the two of us together... I was involved with Infosys initially.

Nandan Nilekani suggested I should be on the Board but Murthy said he did not want a husband and wife team at Infosys. I was shocked since I had the relevant experience and technical qualifications. He said, Sudha if you want to work with Infosys, I will withdraw, happily. I was pained to know that I will not be involved in the company my husband was building and that I would have to give up a job that I am qualified to do and love doing.

It took me a couple of days to grasp the reason behind Murthy's request.. I realized that to make Infosys a success one had to give one's 100 percent. One had to be focussed on it alone with no other distractions. If the two of us had to give 100 percent to Infosys then what would happen to our home and our children? One of us had to take care of our home while the other took care of Infosys. I opted to be a homemaker, after all Infosys was Murthy's dream. It was a big sacrifice but it was one that had to be made. Even today, Murthy says, Sudha, I stepped on your career to make mine. You are responsible for my success. I might have given up my career for my husband's sake.

But that does not make me a doormat.

Learn how to make your presentations sizzle, not fizzle.

A few tweaks here and there can make the difference between a presentation that sings and one that sets them snoozing.

1. Create an outline. Making a list of topics you need to address and rank them into primary and secondary importance. If time is short, you’ll know what to cut out. It also clarifies your ideas. "An outline helps you focus first on your content and how it’s organized," says PowerPoint expert Ellen Finkelstein, author of "How to Do Everything With PowerPoint 2003." "After all, isn’t what you’re saying more important than how you say it?"

2. No star wipes. Microsoft has given users dozens of ways to transfer from one slide to the next, with each new iteration offering more bells and whistles. Avoid the temptation. "Just because PowerPoint has some really cool transitions doesn’t mean they should be used," recommends Kevin Lerner, of the Presentation Team, a consulting firm that advises clients on making presentations. “Most of the time, a simple wipe or dissolve will suffice. Also, it’s good to make the transitions consistent throughout your entire presentation."

3. Choose your colors wisely. Using color can help convey meanings, make phrases stand out, and influence attitudes. All of that information you learned in elementary school about primary colors and complimentary colors can be useful in PowerPoint. Microsoft has some predefined color schemes in PowerPoint and they may be a good place to start. Microsoft also suggests that certain combinations of text color on background colors work best: green on purple, violet on yellow, white on black or blue-green on red. In graphics, try to choose one or more colors from the graphic to use in text, as well. It helps tie the presentation together. Finkelstein suggests using mid-range backgrounds and avoiding white or yellow text, which can be harsh on the eyes.

4. Use bullet points. It might seem to go without saying, but aside from direct quotes, the audience shouldn’t be reading whole paragraphs on a PowerPoint slide. That would be a real yawner.

5. More charts and diagrams, please. Pictures speak 1,000 words, the old saying goes. That’s why you want to sprinkle a variety of graphics into your presentation. An organizational chart can illustrate anything from a company’s chain of command to the families, genera and species of an order of biological organisms, according to Microsoft. For charts, PowerPoint also comes with ready-made cycles, radials, pyramids, Venns or target diagrams that you can customize to fit your pitch.

6. Be careful with sound and video. Audio and visual effects, particularly video, can slow down and even crash the computer during the presentation. Generally, the simpler the presentation, the less chance of crashing. If possible, test run the presentation on the actual computer you'll be using.

7. Practice your presentation. Presentations often don’t work because speakers don’t take them as seriously as traditional presentations. Practice it as you would a regular speech. "By stopping even twenty minutes before your [actual] deadline, or showtime, you can significantly enhance your message by taking time to practice and rehearse," Lerner says.

8. Coming to a conference room near you. PowerPoint now allows you to drop in movies, a short animated cartoon or show using Macromedia Flash. A tutorial on animation for PowerPoint on Microsoft's website.

9. Double check your grammar and spelling. Nothing is more of a turnoff to that English major in the room.

10. If you don’t actually need visuals, leave your PowerPoint at home. Only use PowerPoint when it’s necessary.
